There is something wonderfully unexpected about this sculpture of a pelican. From the front, it has a calm, almost regal presence, with its long sweeping beak, graceful neck and delicately carved feathers. Walk around it, however, and it reveals an entirely different personality.

Rather than hiding the natural form of the teak root, the artisan has embraced it. One side flows into beautifully carved wings and feathered details, while the other preserves the dramatic twists, hollows and rugged contours created by nature itself. Deep cavities, weathered textures and organic curves remain untouched, making it feel as though the bird has emerged naturally from the wood rather than simply being carved from it.
