Developing through summer, ripening in autumn and often remaining suspended from the bare vines well into winter, the pods have a completely different beauty from the flowers that came before them.

This makes them wonderful to display throughout the year, but there is something particularly striking about them in autumn and winter, when their earthy colour, extraordinary texture and long cascading form feel completely at home. No petals, no conventional greenery, no attempt to be pretty in the usual sense — just incredible form, texture and detail.

Long, sweeping branches curve outwards before releasing clusters of hanging pods. At approximately 115 cm from point to point, their scale alone makes them impressive, but it is the combination of their shape, weight and cascading habit that makes them feel almost architectural.

Each stem carries approximately 21 elongated pods, varying in length, thickness and shape. Their surface has a beautiful velvety texture with an almost frosted appearance. Muted blush, dusty pink and taupe sit over warmer terracotta tones, which show through irregularly beneath the paler finish and give the pods remarkable depth.

But some of the most convincing details are also the smallest.Look closely at the very beginning of each pod, where it meets its slender stalk, and you will find a tiny brown, papery collar, beautifully made to resemble the dried remains left behind after the flower has faded and the seed pod begins to develop. It would have been very easy to leave this tiny detail out, yet it makes an enormous difference to how realistic the stems appear. Even the stalks move through subtle shades of green and earthy brown rather than being one uniform colour.

From further away, all those tiny details disappear and the architecture takes over. The long branches reach outwards while the pods fall down in heavy clusters, creating a spectacular silhouette with height, movement and depth.

These are substantial, relatively heavy stems, so they do need support. A tall, sturdy vase or pot is ideal. Several stems can also be arranged together so they naturally support one another, or mixed with strong branches and foliage for additional structure.

Don't be tempted to make them too neat. Let one branch travel sideways, another fall lower and some of the pods overlap. Their unusual, slightly untamed form is exactly what makes an arrangement with these stems so spectacular.

In an old rustic pot they become wonderfully earthy and ancient-looking; in a simple contemporary vessel they look almost like botanical sculpture. In winter, try them with bare branches, pine and candlelight — or leave them completely alone and allow that extraordinary cascading shape to do all the work.

Not flowers. Not ordinary foliage.
