On the real tree, the pod develops around a row of seeds, swelling where each seed sits and tightening dramatically in between. The result looks almost like a string of beads suspended from the branch — and that wonderfully odd botanical detail is what makes this faux stem so captivating.

Each branch carries approximately 26–27 hanging pods, and they are deliberately far from uniform. Some are tiny, containing what appears to be a single swollen seed chamber; others develop into two, three or several rounded sections. Some are plump and beautifully irregular, others slimmer and more elongated. Seen together, they have the wonderfully accidental appearance of something that has simply grown that way.

The colouring makes them even more unusual. Dusty muted mauve, mushroom, faded blush and earthy brown move across a pale, flocked-looking surface, giving the pods an almost weathered, late-season appearance. Against the fine green-brown stalks, the rounded forms seem to float.

And this is where the branch plays a rather lovely trick on the eye.

It looks heavy. Those generous clusters and substantial-looking pods suggest real weight, yet the branch itself is surprisingly lightweight. This makes its enormous scale much easier to arrange than you might expect.

At approximately 117 cm from point to point, it is less like an ordinary artificial stem and more like a piece of botanical drawing translated into three dimensions. The slender branch travels outwards before breaking into fine hanging stems, with the pods suspended at different heights. One stem gives an arrangement an extraordinary silhouette; several together become wonderfully wild and sculptural.

I particularly love these mixed with bare branches or just a little foliage, where the peculiar necklace-like pods remain the star. They also work beautifully alone in an old earthenware pot, a tall antique vessel or something very simple and contemporary.

Perfect throughout the year, but especially compelling as summer begins to fade into autumn and through the quieter months of winter.

Not quite a berry.
